The skies were dark and getting darker Saturday morning when thousands of us gathered in Oklahoma City’s Scissortail Park for the No Kings Day protest and march to City Hall.
We were about halfway to City Hall when the storm hit, so we ended up marching in rain, thunder, and lightening for the last half of the distance. It all could have been faster, but Oklahoma is one of those states where abortion is illegal but vehicular homicide—i.e., running over protesters—is A-OK. Perfectly legal.
That’s how the “pro life” contingent rolls in these parts.
Due to that great respect for life, we had to stay on the sidewalks for the march, stopping for walk signals at intersections and walking only four or five abreast. Thus the march snaked like an endless conga line through downtown Oklahoma City, giving us more exposure to motorists, many of whom drove by honking and waving and expressing their support for the protest. Estimates are that 8,500 to 10,000 people turned out in spite of the weather.
Beyond simply exercising those First Amendment rights that the current administration is out to destroy, I like being a direct witness to and participant in what is happening. It’s also great to be around a bunch of like-minded people full of positive energy. And I love seeing the signs people make!
One of my favorites from Saturday (obviously):
Here’s a small gallery, courtesy of the friend I was with.

I would have liked music on the march—we chanted slogans, but I wanted to be singing along to this man’s sign. This picture was posted on Substack, so I’m not sure where he was (someplace sunny).
This one—from Austin, TX—nails it as well.
One takeaway? I need to up my sign game!
You GO, Girl!
